If you’ve been looking into hair loss treatments, there’s a good chance you’ve stumbled across platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy as a treatment option.
The theory is that the growth factors that are released by the platelets work with the stem cells that lay at the bottom of the hair follicles. When these cells are stimulated, new hair follicles are produced and more blood is produced.
For most people, a series of PRP injections can lead to a thicker, fuller head of hair, even more so when paired with hair transplantation.
You can find out more about the cost of hair transplant at a Melbourne Hair Clinic here but let’s first, look at why it’s beneficial to combine this procedure with PRP therapy.
A PRP Study
Over the years, countless hair loss treatments have been trialed but none of them were able to easily treat male pattern baldness.
PRP therapy is not a product but a treatment that uses the patient’s own blood to stimulate hair growth. Once the patient’s blood has been withdrawn and processed, it is injected into the scalp where it rejuvenates the cells.
In 2013, a study was conducted on a group of men who had been on hair loss treatment medication for several months but weren’t seeing any improvements. Hair pull tests were used to see how many hairs were falling out during each clinical session. Each of these men were injected with PRP every two weeks for four sessions. After 12 weeks had passed, the patients were once again evaluated.
Where most men were losing around 10 hairs per pull test, after the PRP treatments, the average patient was only losing 3 hairs.
Most of the study participants started seeing a reduction in hair loss after the first PRP injection, with moderate improvements in overall hair volume.
Prior to the start of the PRP treatments, the average number of follicular units was around 70 but after receiving treatment, this shot up to an average of 93. Patients reported high levels of satisfaction following their PRP injections and the only side effects were mild pain and redness.
Seeking Treatment for Your Hair Loss
Your hair is one of your key features, which means hair loss can affect your overall appearance in a big way.
This change in appearance can really affect someone psychologically and can cause major issues with self-esteem in both work and social situations.
While there are a number of products that will reduce your testosterone levels, they tend to come with a number of unpleasant side effects, including a low libido and headaches.
Treatments such as hair transplantation and PRP therapy are more ideal because they encourage natural hair growth and since your own blood is used to achieve these results, there is less chance of side effects.
PRP is actually also used in a number of other surgical procedures because it encourages healing and reduces infection so it really is a completely safe and effective way to treat your hair loss.
